Dean M. Mortimer is a Republican member of the Idaho Senate, representing the 32nd District since 2008. He is currently Vice Chair of the Senate Education Committee. He received a Bachelor's Degree in Speech and a Masters in Business Administration at Utah State University in Logan, UT.

Early Life and Career

Dean M. Mortimer is an Idaho native, born in Moscow, ID, and raised in the southeast region of the state. He attended grade school in Ammon and Ucon, and both junior high school and high school in Rigby. Following completion of his secondary education, Dean attended Ricks College in Rexburg, ID, in the fall of 1969. He then completed a two-year religious mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in France, returning to Ricks College in 1972. While attending Ricks College, Dean served as a student body officer for the 1973-74 school year. He was also honored as Man of the Year at Ricks College in 1973. Dean later returned to Ricks College/BYU-Idaho to serve on the Alumni Council Board and then as the Alumni Council President from 2000 to 2002.[1]

After earning an Associate’s Degree, Dean transferred to Utah State University in Logan, Utah, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Speech and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA).[2]

Dean started work in the mortgage banking industry in 1977 at Utah Mortgage Corporation. He worked for Security Pacific Corporation as a construction loan officer, and later performed the same role for American Savings and Loan Association. He also served as Vice President of Development for the McNiel/Mehew Group in Salt Lake City, Utah, prior to returning to Idaho. After moving back to Idaho in 1983, and making south-eastern Idaho home, Dean started First Financial Corporation, a mortgage company, in 1985. Dean has served on the Board of the Idaho State Mortgage Bankers Association and was its President from 1991 to 1992.[3]

In addition to the mortgage industry, Dean is also very involved in residential and commercial development. He launched Comfort Construction in 1998 and Commerce Properties Investments LLC in 2002. Both organizations continue through the present time.

Beyond his role as a business professional in the financial services and real estate development industries, Dean is very involved in local, regional and statewide volunteer activities. He has served in the Boy Scouts of America for more than two decades, most recently a Scoutmaster for the 2005 National Jamboree. He has also been active in the Idaho Falls Chamber of Commerce since 1984. From 2000 to 2002, Dean served as Legislative District 32 Chairman for the Republican Party, and has been a Precinct Committeeman.

He is the husband of 35 years to Judy. He is the father of four children and grandfather of three grandchildren with two on the way.[4] [5]
